| There is no defined point in ROM hacking. Most will do it for one of several reasons however. The reasons include, but are not limited to, notiriety, to profit, to the desire to make a game.
You can gain each of these things if your game does well.
To become notorious you need to make a game worth playing. Put effort into it, and don't drop it half way through. The longer you hack a rom, the more shine it will lose. However if you stick with it, you'll become incredibly skilled in hacking and you will have new motivation.
Profit cannot be earned by selling your ROM, that is illegal. However profit can be earned by using an adf.ly link or other type of click for profit link in order to reach your download link.
Lastly if you just want to build a game, you can do virtually anything in Pokemon from designing an RPG to just your own twist on a Pokemon game.
